How to combine festivals in Novi Sad with sightseeing and food

GuideFestivals and culture

Festivals in Novi Sad are not just a reason to buy a ticket and turn up at one venue. They can set the rhythm of your whole visit: where you walk, when you have lunch and how much time is left for getting to know the city. The best plan starts with choosing the events that really interest you. Only then add sightseeing and food, rather than trying to fit in everything you have seen advertised.

Theatre for visitors who want a longer stay

Sterijino pozorje is a festival of national drama and theatre, founded in 1956. If you are coming for a performance, read the programme and check which stage it is on. A single evening performance can be a good anchor for a daytime walk and an early dinner. You will find a more detailed plan for such a day in our visitor’s guide to Sterijino pozorje.

Jazz and street performances for a different experience of the city

The Novi Sad Jazz Festival brings together jazz programmes, and its venues and concept should be checked for each edition. The Street Musicians Festival, also known as Gradić Fest, combines music with performances and other events around the city. At events like these it is important to know how far the programmes overlap and how long it takes you to get between venues.

A family programme needs a different pace

The Zmaj Children’s Games are an important part of the festival offering for the youngest. When you come with children, choose events to suit their age and leave room for breaks. Two carefully chosen events can be more enjoyable than a day-long attempt to see everything. Plan food and rest as a real part of the day, not as the gap between shows or workshops.

How to check the current festival calendar

Check dates, venues, admission conditions and performers on the organiser’s official website and in the Novi Sad Tourist Organisation’s calendar. Old blog posts and photos can help you understand the atmosphere, but they are no reliable guide to where the next edition will take place. Check the programme especially carefully if you are planning your visit far in advance or coming for just one performance.

Where to fit a meal between events

If your schedule leaves you a break in the centre, choose a meal that fits the time you have. A performance with a fixed start time calls for different arrangements from a wander through an open-air programme. At Lazin Salaš you can look at our menu of home cooking and arrange a reservation in advance. When booking, let us know if you are going on to an event at a set time after your meal.

For the part of the day with no festival commitments, use our suggested tour of Novi Sad. That way your visit won’t be reduced to arriving at an event and leaving it: you will also get to know the centre, the local cuisine and places you may want to come back to.
