Start at Freedom Square
Freedom Square (Trg slobode) is a practical starting point. Here you will see City Hall, the Name of Mary Church and the monument to Svetozar Miletić. Take a moment to look at the façades, then carry on along Zmaj Jovina Street. If you are meeting someone in the centre, “by the monument” is easy to explain even to someone who is in Novi Sad for the first time.
Zmaj Jovina, Dunavska and a break in the park
Walk on towards the Bishop’s Palace (Vladičanski dvor) and Dunavska Street. Don’t just look at the shop windows: notice the gateways, the passages and the floors above the shops and cafés. On a first visit it is more enjoyable to take this stretch slowly than to turn it into a list of photos. Save Danube Park for a short break before you head on towards the river.
Cross to the Petrovaradin side
If you have the energy for the climb, set aside part of the day for Petrovaradin Fortress. The view of the Danube and the city is a good reason not to skip this part of the route. Check times in advance for the museum exhibitions and guided tours. Exploring the fortress involves more walking than a stroll around the centre, so comfortable shoes and a realistic schedule make all the difference.
Plan a lunch that belongs to this region
For the food part of the day, choose something you don’t eat on every trip. Noodle soup, goulash, gibanica or šne nokle each offer a different way into home cooking. If there are several of you at the table, you can order different dishes and compare notes, without everyone having to choose the same meal. Our guide to Vojvodina dishes will help you find your way among the names.
At Lazin Salaš, in Laze Telečkog Street, you can take your break and then carry on with your walk through the centre. Take a look at the Lazin Salaš menu and choose a lunch to suit your appetite. If you are coming in the evening, you can reserve a table and save the end of the day for dinner and music.
How to fit the route to your day
If you are coming with children, cut down the number of stops and allow a longer break in the park. If the weather is bad, pick one museum instead of a long walk. If you only have a few hours, focus on the centre and lunch, and save the fortress for your next visit. A good day out should leave you with an impression of the city, not just tired feet.
