Home-cooked Vojvodina dishes served on a table in Lazin Salaš

Ten dishes to get to know Vojvodina cuisine in Novi Sad

GuideHome cooking

Vojvodina cuisine is easier to get to know through several different meals than through a single dish said to be the most typical. Different culinary traditions meet on the local table, and many dishes also belong to the wider area of Serbia and Central Europe. So this selection is a suggestion for tasting, not a claim that all of these dishes originated only in Vojvodina.

Soup and gibanica to start

1Homemade noodle soup. A clear first course with meat, vegetables and noodles is a good introduction to lunch. At Lazin Salaš it is made with chicken and beef, with vegetables and homemade noodles.

2Gibanica. This pie of thin pastry sheets and cheese is just right when you want a hot starter or a simpler meal on its own. Its appeal lies in the contrast between the soft layers and the baked top.

Dishes for lovers of gravy and stews

3Vojvodina goulash. On our menu it is a beef goulash with mashed potatoes or homemade pasta. Choose the side according to whether you prefer a creamy mouthful or pasta that soaks up the gravy.

4Bećarac. Tomatoes, peppers and onions are the basis of the dish. Our menu has versions with turkey and with smoked pork loin, served with mashed potatoes.

5Prebranac. You can try these baked beans as a Lenten, meat-free dish or in a version with homemade sausage. The two make different meals, even though they start from the same main ingredient.

6Homemade sarma. Sauerkraut leaves, minced meat and rice make a familiar combination for the colder part of the year. Here sarma is a seasonal dish, so check whether it is available on the day you visit.

Not everyone needs the same main course

7Veal shank in gravy. At Lazin Salaš it is served with a kajmak sauce and mashed potatoes. It is the choice for a guest who cares more about tender meat and gravy than about a crisp crust.

8Homemade sausage. If you prefer the grill, sausage with mashed potatoes takes the tasting in a different direction. When you share a table, one person can choose a cooked dish and another this main course.

Two sweet endings

9Strudel. Pastry and filling make for a completely different experience from creamy desserts. Ask the staff about the current filling before you order.

10Šne nokle. White dumplings of whipped egg white and a custard of milk and egg yolks make up a distinctive homemade dessert. Read more about the name and the texture in our guide to šne nokle.

How to choose your first meal

You don’t have to try everything in one lunch. Choose a soup or a starter, one main course and a dessert, then go in a different direction next time. Look at the Lazin Salaš menu and put together a meal that suits your appetite. If you are still choosing a main course, read the story of Karađorđe’s schnitzel, a classic of Serbian cuisine that is also on our menu.
